In the afternoon of this past Wednesday, C. S. Bartow [C. S. Bato], a familiar haole in this town, and Auctioneer, and if we are not mistaken, Consul to the Republic of Chile; and in the afternoon of this Thursday, his body was carried away. He did not die of smallpox [hebera].
—That very same afternoon, the wife of W. C. Jones [Loio Aeto] died quickly at her home in Puunui. She died of smallpox.
