Four Hawaiian boys on the whaling ship Gayhead, 1895.

Docked Whaling Ship

On the 3rd of March the whaling ship Gay Head, Captain Shorey, left from the port of San Francisco on the 18th of December last year, made a stop at this port. The ship sailed slowly while keeping a lookout for spouting whales. And on the birthday of George Washington, with the ship far outside of Kealakekua, they spotted five sperm whales [kohola pama] spouting, so they chased and speared them with harpoons, after they were caught, they worked at rendering the oil.

On the 1st of March, they were caught in a storm, and this continued until the following day. Therefore they sailed for a great distance and stopped here at Honolulu [Kou] on the date mentioned above. He is a captain from West India, and he is taking along his wife and their children. Also aboard this whaler are four Hawaiian boys whose names are Albert Mitchell, Sam Kalua, Sam John, and John Thomas. Mitchell has been with that captain for three years, and so he has been promoted from sailor [luina] to chief harpooner [aliʻi ʻō iʻa]. The captain and some sailors came ashore this past Sunday and Monday. They will sail directly from Honolulu to the Arctic.
