Death of Stephen Kahele Kunukau and Kailaa Kunukau, 1896.

Left for the other side was our younger sibling and our beloved mother. Our younger brother Stephen Kahele Kunukau left this life on the 15th of March 1896.

He was born of A. H. Kunukau and Kailaa Kunukau on the 19th of March 1877, at Kanaio, Hanuauia, Maui, and he lived until 18 years, 11 months, and 25 days, when he set aside his burdens for all times.

Aloha for him; man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.

And in the midday of the 20th of March 1896, our mama Kailaa Kunukau left this life, and left us, the children, grandchildren, and family.

She was born on the 28th of Feb. 1834 from the loins of Kekuhaulua male, and Kamaka female at Kanaio, Honuaula, Maui, and she married Kunukau in the year 1849, and from them came 15 children, of which 7 are still living. And the number of her grandchildren living is 30, and her great-grandchildren living number 5. She spent 62 years in this life. She was a loving mother, kind, generous, and hospitable to all. And she was a mother who worked for the good of the Lord.

I luna i ke ao
Kuu home mau
He malihini au
Ma keia ao
He wao akua nei
He pilikia e
Ka lani i luna e
Kuu home mau
Na Iehova no e haawi mai
A nana no i lawe aku
Hoonaniia ka inoa o Iehova
O maua no me ke kaumaha.

[Up in the clouds
Is my eternal home
I am a stranger
To this world
It is a wilderness
It is trouble
The heavens above
Is my eternal home
It is Jehovah who giveth
And he who taketh away
Glory be the name of Jehovah
The two of us with sadness]
