REVEREND LYONS KAKANI LEFT THIS WORLDLY LIFE
HILO, Hawaii, Sept. 22 At one o’clock of this morning, Rev. Lyons Keaulana Kakani, 72, grew weary of this life at his home in Waiakea.
He was the Kahu of the Kukuihaele Church, and the Editor of the newspaper Ka Hoaloha [The Friend].
He was born in Kipahulu, Maui, but his youth was spent in Honolulu. He was back on Hawaii for only 20 years, where he lived until the power of God reached out, the one who has the power to reach out for the life breath of a man and take it.
And he left behind his widow, children and grandchildren, who are grieving after him, they being Sanford, a carpenter in Hilo; Raymond, with the Engineering Department of the county of Hilo; and Joseph; a daughter, Mrs. Lilly K. Nobriga, and two grandchildren.
The funeral services were held at Kukuihaele, where his wake [?? hana hoonana] was held.
The newspaper Ke Alakai o Hawaii joins in with the family in their sadness for their loved one.
[The new publication, “Nā Kahu: Portraits of Native Hawaiian Pastors at Home and Abroad, 1820–1900” has an entry for Lyons Keaulana Kakani, but nowhere do they mention his wife, Phoebe.]

Aloha! Reverend Liona “Lyons” K. Kakani is my Tutunui. My grandmother Dahlis told me stories about her Tutu Papa. He was a very educated Kane who was dedicated to the kanaka of Hawaii during times of much uncertainty. Grama was the apple of Tutu Papas eye and was loved very dearly. He would take her everywhere by horseback and grama would ride sidesaddle all the way to Hilo from Kukuihaele with Tutu Liona at her side. Although she was only 9 years old when he was reborn into Kingdom of God, she remembered him as if it was yesterday. Mahalo for translating!
