Rose known by the name “Prince Lei Lani,” who was made a high chief of the Samoans, before he left Hawaii nei with twenty Samoans for America on a singing and Samoan dancing tour. In the scene on the top picture seen is E. K. Rose holding a war club; and below is a scene showing the preparation of kava before it being drunk.

E.K. Rose was my step-grandfather and I have many pictures of him when he was a young man. He told me many stories of his childhood and for the twenty or so years that I knew him he showed me how to be kind and also how to stand straight.

Hello, EK was my paternal great-great uncle, brother of my great grandmother, Pauline D. Keohoikamana Rose. My father still remembers Uncle EK, when he was married to my great-great aunt, Aggie Auld, dancing at the Graumann’s Chinese Theater in “The Tropics” the live show before the showing of “White Shadows of the South Seas”, MGM’s first talkie. My Dad, EK great nephew went backstage to see his aunt and uncle. My Dad (94 years old) has some great stories about EK.

As I remember, Prince Lei Lani is credited in the 1937 Hollywood film, “Waikiki Wedding”. A number of Hawaiians appeared in it as extras and there was some level of consultation with Hawaiians on more authentic costuming, dance moves, language, and props than was usual in movies up till then – not that the end result is truly authentic, mind you.

Yes, Uncle EK was the priest in the wedding scene in the movie. I have a copy of it. At the time, there were several movies being made where my great-great uncle and his sister (my great grandmother) Pauline D. Keohoikamana Rose had bcome the “go to” contact for all Polynesian natives, living in the Los Angeles area, for Polynesian and Hawaiian dancers, entertainers, and authentic natives for Hollywood productions. My great grandmother was “Mata” in the 1937 movie “Hurricane”, where she was billed as Pauline Steele. She had also been a support for Requel Torres, who played Fayaway in the 1928 movie “White Shadows of the South Seas. Uncle EK had a dance troupe when he was married to my great-great aunt, Aggie Auld, and danced at the Graumann’s Chinese Theater in “The Tropics” the live show before the showing of “White Shadows of the South Seas”, MGM’s first talkie in 1929. According to my Dad, who just passed away at 95, he remembered being at his grandmother Pauline’s house, while she regularly entertained many from the Hawaiian & Hollywood communities. Duke Kahanamoku was a dear friend of my great-grandmother, and my dad remembers being hoisted up on the Duke’s shoulders in celebration of my dad’s 5th birthday party.
Uncle EK was also in the 1951 version of “Bird of Paradise” with Debra Paget, Jeff Chandler & Louis Jourdan. He was listed as the “Chief” in that movie. I have a copy of that as well.
