The noticable lack of enthusiasm at the Royalist mass meeting yesterday afternoon was not surprising. The half-dozen foreigners who got up the affair, to protest against the Republic, will now probably admit it is a hard matter to work up native enthusiasm at a political funeral.

The Republic of Hawaii was proclaimed by Sanford B. Dole on the steps of Iolani Palace (then renamed the Executive Building) on July 4, 1894. Need one point out the symbolism of that date for this event to take place? Or the choice of location to stage it? The intention of eventual annexation was clearly at work.
