One must be very careful when crossing from one side of the street to the other, because the automobiles speed by without paying attention to the people on the street.
[It seems like there are more and more accidents out lately. Please be careful out there!!]
(Aloha Aina, 12/14/1917, p. 4)
In 1917, unfortunately, few people paid attention when crossing streets. There were no marked crosswalks then, or even traffic lights, and pedestrians often still walked wherever and whenever they had a mind to – as they had been able to do before there were any cars. So even careful or attentive drivers often couldn’t avoid a person who walked or ran into the path of their vehicle.
