May Day in Hilo Town, 1942.

Pertaining to Lei Day

Put on by the Hawaiian Civic Club

The main things on the schedule for Lei Day this year were explained by Wilfred K. Hussey, the president of the Hawaiian Civic Club [kalapu Kiwila Hawaii].

The schedule is being planned out by the committee selected for that work, and chaired by Clifford H. Bowman and assisted by Peter Mehau, Charles Murray, Ernest Fernandez, Johnson Kahili and Charles Auld.

Mr. Hussey explained that they are considering holding the lei contest at 9 a. m. on Mei 1, under the big tree at the corner of Waianuenue and Kinoole streets at Kalakaua Square [Kuea Kalakaua]. Mrs. Emma P. Giacometti, the principal of the schools of Central Hawaii, was asked to have the different schools and the students to bring lei for the show on that day. That invitation has been extended as well to the public to join in on that same activity on that day.
