To His Majesty Lunalilo, King of the Sandwich Islands, Our Great and Good Friend.
Great and Good Friend: It is with deep regret that We have received the letter of Your Majesty informing Us of the demise of Your Predecessor and Cousin, His Majesty Kamehameha V.
While taking sincere part in the mournful loss which You have sustained, We address our prayers to the Almighty that He may design to send His divine blessings on the Government that You are now inaugurating, and that He may keep Your Majesty in His holy and excellent guard.
Given at St. Petersburg, on the 17th day of March, 1873, in the nineteenth year of our reign.
