Dear Brother: I have just received Your Majesty’s letter informing me of the demise of Your Cousin, King Kamehameha V., on the 11th of December last, and announcing also, that in accordance with the Constitution of the Kingdom, the Legislative Assembly having elected You King of the Hawaiian Islands. You had ascended the throne on the 9th day of January, ult. I sympathize with the sorrow which Your Majesty experiences, and while assuring You of my earnest desire to strengthen the ties of good harmony existing between our Governments, i avail myself of this opportunity to convey to You the expression of the high consideration and inviolable affection with which I am, Dear Brother,
