Dear and Good Friend: I have just received the letter dated January 14th ult., which Your Majesty has kindly addressed me, to inform me of the death of King Kamehameha V., and also of your election as Sovereign of the Hawaiian Islands, and of your accession to the throne. While offering to Your Majesty my sincere congratulations on this occasion, I beg you to be fully assured that I will heartily endeavor, with all my power, to maintain the good relations so happily existing between our Governments.
I avail myself, at the same time, of this opportunity to convey to Your Majesty the expression of my best wishes for your happiness, and for the increasing prosperity of the country over which you have been called to reign.
Your good Friend,
