Jonah Kumalae’s ukulele are a hit across America, 1915.

THE DEMAND FOR UKULELE IS GREAT

According to news from San Francisco, the ukulele [pila ki-ka ukulele] is in great demand from all over America, because it was heard first-hand by thousands of visitors heard the ukulele being played at an exposition in San Francisco [Panama-Pacific International Exposition].

Recently, Jonah Kumalae went into an agreement with a San Francisco musical instrument dealer to supply them with two-hundred and fifty ukulele per month, but currently, the number has been increased to five hundred a month.

Because there has been much interest by some people to see the playing of the ukulele, they all asked to be taught how to play that instrument, and Kailimai [Henry Kailimai] is teaching some people.

There were two hundred girls that arrived from Chicago at the exposition grounds, and when they saw the ukulele, a great number of them purchased some instruments, and returned home.

This great demand for the ukulele by the Americans was attested to by the passengers of the steamships which visit this dock, and according to them, there have been many orders received in San Francisco from instrument dealers in the East, but those orders cannot be filled.

Jonah Kumalae is the only one making ukulele along with his many workers, and each month a great many instruments are being sent to the exposition grounds.
