Pledge.
We are publishing Article 101 of the Constitution of the Republic of Hawaii, so that the Lahui may understand it, and so that the Jurors for the upcoming August Session see it, that being this:
Article 101:—No person shall be eligible to be an Officer, Senator or Representative under the Republic, or an Elector of Senators or Representatives, or a Juror, until he shall have taken and subscribed the following oath or affirmation, viz:
“I do solemnly swear, (or affirm,) in the presence of Almighty God, that I will support the Constitution, Laws and Government of the Republic of Hawaii; and will not, either directly or indirectly, encourage or assist in the restoration or establishment of a Monarchical form of Government in the Hawaiian Islands.”
By this, we understand that the Royalists are prohibited from becoming juror unless they take the pledge above, denying the independent ideas in our heart.
Man is not like an animal that can be made to do the bidding of his keeper by his urging, but God gave within man His enlightened Spirit, knowledgeable spirit, that can discern right from wrong; and live victoriously, joyful in feelings of love, independence, and righteousness, like God’s.
Let us be steadfast, as we were from the beginning. Nothing can be done nor is there a force that can take away that idea from us.
