THE INTENTIONS OF THE MAKAAINANA OF NORTH KONA, ISLAND OF HAWAII, FOR THE GOOD OF THE THRONE AND THE WELL-BEING OF THE PEOPLE.
We, the makaainana of the King, living in the district of North Kona, Hawaii island.
Through our Committee, humbly report that under the protection of the Law, for the life of the People and the good of the Throne of Hawaii.
First—It is troubling and pains the heart, the news heard now of the Small Pox [Mai Hebera], the thing that lay great waste upon Hawaii in the years 1853–4, and took the precious lives of tens of thousands of our own friends.
Second—There is no Vaccinating Doctor [Kauka O lima] in this district at this time. Therefore, we proclaim:
First—Let the Board of Health send immediately a Doctor skilled at Vaccination supplied with good Pus [Palahehe] to our district, from the Government.
Second—From this day forth, we announce to all, that no skiff coming from a ship sailing from Honolulu on the island of Oahu may land. Passengers and baggage are also not allowed to come ashore. No friends from other districts will be welcomed, if sickness is found in that district; but should God agree to end this difficulty, then this communication of love to you O Hawaii, will be concluded.
