William Haehae Heen faces racism from the United States, 1917.

RACISM.

A past issue of the Bulletin spread the news from Washington pertaining to W. H. Heen. The news being that the Senate is holding back their approval of Heen as Judge in place of Coke. The big reason behind this disapproval is that Heen is part Chinese [Hapa-pake]; where some Senators believe that this blood would not look well in a High Post in the Nation of the Unites States. How Astonishing!

And with this the shock came from the mouths of Hawaiians who want to see their intelligent  men in high positions of this Territory. What is wrong with the haole? This is proof of their racism towards other ethnicities. If America indeed goes to war with Germany, then what? Will they despise it if the Hapa-pake fight for the United States? These people take no notice of the intelligence of the Hawaiians, and see them as set apart; and this is truly a foolish thing—it demeans the name of the Hawaiian Lahui.

Perhaps they will give their approval, but if that is the case, they will be showing the impropriety of their withholding approval of that intelligent man, while showing the bad seeds of racist thought; it is enough to raise disbelief in the natives of the land. Where in the world is their sense of equality that is seen in the constitution of the United States? Where in the world is their Christian goodness that they preach all over the place? This act is a glimpse at how our way of life will be in the future, and it is not a good thing.

Our great problem is that the intelligent ones of the land do not gather together to direct important endeavors of the Territory, and to support good men like Mr. Heen. When will we become enlightened?

[It sounds like the United States is stepping farther and farther back into these days once again.]
