At 12 o’clock on Thursday, May 29 past, Mr. Davies, the Minister Resident of Britain arrived at the Palace to give a Sealed document from the Queen of Great Britain:
Victoria, by the Grace of God, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, &c., to Lunalilo, King of the Hawaiian Islands, Our Good Friend, we send our aloha:
By Your letter of the 14th of January, We learned of the death of Kamehameha V. Your Royal Cousin and Predecessor, on the 11th of Dec. past, and Your ascending the Throne. We ask of You to accept our condolences for the death of Your Predecessor, and we also offer Our sincere pleasure and Our good thoughts, for Your ascending the Throne, and may your reign for and extended period, and may Your reign be blessed. And We ask of the Almighty to assist You. Given by us at Our Palace at Windsor Castle, on the 4th of April, 1873, that being the 36th year of Our Reign.
