[AFFECTION BY THE AMERICAN FLAG

To you, O sun, shining down,
Throughout the ends of the world,
Show forth your beauty,
O beloved flag of America;
It rules sternly,
A peaceful treaty is my desire;
There is Europe, a great land,
Engulfed in a great war,
Horrifyingly going about ravaging,
That is what I see in the newspaper.
Onward, O Youth,
And wear the lei of victory,
Hold fast the motto of the fearless,
Be steadfast in your patriotism;
The Heavenly Power will assist,
On your entangled paths;
That is the only sanctuary,
That your enemies be turned to naught.
Your power is no more, O Germany,
Return to the broiling sea like a moi,
Let the refrain be told,
My dear American flag will be victorious;
Let the refrain be told once more,
A peaceful treaty is my desire.

Did you see today’s Welo Hou post? It is interesting to see how that famous mele for King Kalakaua was reworked to now support the American cause in World War I.]
