Most native Hawaiians who have traveled in the States will appreciate the feelings of Prince Kuhio and his wife, as described below, the more because of personal experiences of their own. East of the Sierras any man of color, seeking first-class accommodations, is likely to be mistaken for a negro and treated accordingly. A year or more ago the Queen and her attendants were refused accommodations at a famous Eastern hotel because they were taken for the “Black Patti troupe.” White men with Hawaiian wives have been subjected to special annoyance on this score.
