Hilo Plans Gay Events For Kalakaua Festival

HILO — A parade, with Duke Kahanamoku as grand marshal.

A relay race, with boys using fresh mullet as batons.

A beard contest, with some 50 entrants expected.

A bicycle race, from Kohala to Hilo.

A town, done over in the era of Hawaii’s “Merry Monarch,” King Kalakaua.

These are just a few of the things being set up as Hilo goes into the final weeks of preparation for its “Merry Monarch Festival,” scheduled to take place here from April 1 to 4. Continue reading

Musician Johnny Miner dies in El Paso, 1920.

That Hawaiian Dies of the Flu in El Paso, Texas, 1920.

This past Monday, a letter was received by the Star Bulletin newspaper from Dave Makuakane. This letter told that Johnny Miner died in El Paso Texas; the letter was written on the 24th of March past. Dave Makuakane also stated that they sent word to the family by telegraph, but they did not receive a reply, therefore Johnny Miner was buried in El Paso,  Texas. Continue reading

Another race is being readied, approved by the owners of Johnny Hayward and Judah, and it will begin on the 7th of March, and the place where they will race is Kapiolani Park. Schumann is the owner of Judah and Mr. Quinn is the owner of Johnny Hayward; the stakes are $200 and the goal is one mile.
