Ex-Queen Liliuokalani’s Commissioner Arrives at the National Capital.

Washington, Feb. 18.—Paul Neuman, the envoy of Queen Liliuokalani to the United States, accompanied by Prince David, of the royal family, and two servants, reached the city late last night, and took apartments at the Richmond. To-day Mr. Neuman held a conference with acting Secretary of State Wharton, with whom he had a long talk concerning the object of his visit. Mr. Wharton could, of course, do nothing, and Mr. Neuman expressed himself as satisfied that his only chance for successfully representing the claims of the ex-Queen lay through the medium of Congress. Prince David said: “We do not intend to make a struggle against annexation. If the United States government sees fit to annex Hawaii we shall make no complaints.”

[I am not sure if this statement was ever published in any Hawaii newspaper.]

Kaiulani Will Come to America in Her Own Interest.

She Was Sent Away to Be Educated, and Now She Is Kept In Ignorance.

Special to The Morning Call.

London, Feb. 18.—The Princess Kaiulani sends the following address to the American people:

“Four years ago, at the request of Thurston, the Hawaiian Cabinet Minister, I was sent away to England to be educated privately and fitted  for the position which, by the constitution of Hawaii, I was to inherit.

“All these years I have patiently and in exile striven to fit myself for my return this year to my country.

“I am now told that Thurston is in Washington asking you to take away my flag and my throne. No one tells me even this officially. Have I done anything wrong that this wrong should be done me and my people?

“I am coming to Washington to plead for my throne, my nation and my flag. Will not the great American people hear me?

“Kaiulani.”

Washington, Feb. 18.—While the annexation commissioners were paying their respects to Secretary Elkins at the War Department this morning their diplomatic antagonist, Paul Neumann, the ex-Queen’s representative, was in another part of the building in consultation with acting Secretary Wharton of the State Department, with whom he had a long talk concerning the object of his visit. Wharton, of course, could do nothing, and Neumann expressed himself as satisfied. His chance for successfully representing the claims of the ex-Queen lay through the medium of Congress.

Prince David said: “We do not intend to make a struggle against annexation. If the United States Government sees fit to annex Hawaii we shall make no complaint.”

[Although the same quote was printed in newspapers across America, what each newspaper did with the title varies. Also, what they put next to the article should be looked at as well. The Morning Call was printed in San Francisco.

Amazing! Hawaii Has Not Been Americanized?

By our understanding, it has been nearly 22 whole years from when Hawaii was transferred under the administration of various governments until today, through the Kingdom of Queen Liliuokalani being stolen. It is a fact that the American flag did not wave from the flagpoles of Iolani during all of those years, being that during the first two years or perhaps three, the mountains, the ridges, the rivers, and the shores of Hawaii (but not the people of the land) were under the administration of the P. G. (P. I. G. in actuality), and for two or three years after that, under the name of the Republic of Hawaii, and for 16 years until today under the Territory of Hawaii. After the Kingdom of Hawaii was turned into the P. (I.) G. of Hawaii and thereafter, the Republic of Hawaii, and finally to the Territory of Hawaii, there is but only one good thing that we see during these many changes, that is the name HAWAII, and we believe that should the government in Hawaii nei change every year, for a 100 years, Hawaii will live on in its name.

During these years of changing of the political administration of this beloved land of Hawaii nei, America was the only foreign nation that posited itself greatly into Hawaii nei, and because of its support did these changes occur, being that it was Americans who instigated these actions; and during all of these changes, there was but one motivation, that being the annexation of this land to the United States of America. We do not forget the big-talking deceitful words of those people, “Should Hawaii be annexed to America, it will be with shovels that the people of this land will be scooping up silver and gold, and work will be had by all who ask.” These were the benefits that were projected upon the walls of Hawaii nei, but that is not the truth of what is being seen today.  It is not silver and gold that the people of the land are scooping with shovels. It is only in the pockets of the few that silver and gold flows. There are no jobs that “Uncle Sam” is just giving away, unless you have a starched collar, some gloves, and skin like that of an angel, and speak the words of the Cherubim; that is what the people of this land need to get ready so that they can acquire food and other necessities of life. Expressing aloha ʻāina on the anniversary of the overthrow

It happened 122 years ago today. President Grover Cleveland describes it in his message to the U. S. Congress, dated December 18, 1893.

“And so it happened that on the 16th day of January, 1893, between four and five o’clock in the afternoon, a detachment of marines from the United States Steamer Boston, with two pieces of artillery, landed at Honolulu. The men, upwards of 160 in all, were supplied with double cartridge belts filled with ammunition and with haversacks and canteens, and were accompanied by a hospital corps with stretchers and medical supplies. This military demonstration upon the soil of Honolulu was of itself an act of war. . .”

By nightfall of the next day, the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi had been illegally overthrown.

Hawaiʻi’s people today live in the resulting repercussions of that infamous day. For some, reflection on those historical events still conjures up the ʻeha (pain, hurt) of being wronged.

There may never be an adequate outlet to express the ʻeha, nevertheless, this story commemorates the 122nd anniversary of the illegal overthrow and honors some of the great expressions of aloha ʻāina (patriotism) coming from Hawaiʻi’s aliʻi (monarchs) and lāhui (people).→Continue reading.

Queen Liliʻuokalani, Hawaiʻi’s last reigning monarch, was imprisoned after her kingdom was illegally overthrown on January 17, 1893.

Martial law in a situation of this kind is a ridiculous and absurd proceeding and does not reflect creditably on the part of those who designed it or who still keep it enforced. The late Ministry and their adherents surrendered everything peacefully and quietly. No one wants to attempt to change the state of affairs existing as everyone is content to await the decision of the United States and abide by it. The Hawaiians are eminently a peaceable people and no one is either exiting them or endearvoring to excite them. All are confident in the justice of their cause and willing to await the result with patience. The foreigners who adhere to that side advise them so, and follow their own advice; to do nothing calculated to annoy, scare, or injure anyone or anything, and this advice is being sedulously followed.

On this day, the American warship Boston left the harbor and the land of which it assisted in persecuting and stealing its independence with the missionary descendants from Boston. Where could its previous captain [Gilbert C. Wiltse] be resting? According to the Calvinists, he is in Heaven, and perhaps the ship will go to fetch him.

AN AMERICAN MAFIA.

“The Queen never will be restored to the throne, for she will be shot within 24 hours, and every man who takes office under her will be shot also—we have men secretly sworn to do it.”

Such was the remark made to the writer by a brainless young sprig of the “citizens reserve,” such is the tenor of numerous open threats of the canaille composing the annexation club, the citizens reserve and the American league organizations that pretending to be patriotically American are in fact veritable nests of socialism, fenianism and mafia.

To their shame be it said that these mafias are organized under men calling themselves Americans, men who heretofore have been regarded as respectable and intelligent citizens: Hatch, Castle, Wilder, Jones, Smith, McGrew, Emerson, and so on, whose names will pass into history as knavish pirates in a plot to steal a nation and compel America to receive the stolen goods.

A recent article in the Holomua warned that a wave of insanity had struck Honolulu in accordance with a well known theory of cycles. The malady appears to be growing worse, for certain it is, that all the men and women concerned in the overthrow of the Queen, the terrorism and misgovernment of a P. G. military despotism, and the present display of hostilities against the United States, all act like people demented. Continue reading →
