The poem below is taken by us from the newspaper, “Commoner,” of William J. Bryan, the Presidential candidate of the Democrats who lost in the last Presidential race of the United States.

THE 12th OF AUGUST.

This is the Day that made a year since the day that the Hawaiian Flag was taken down and the American Flag was raised on the flag pole of Iolani Palace.

The hurt down in our guts [naau] is unimaginable when remembering this; for there is no Hawaiian that can say that his naau is happy with what was done. Because if we are not mistaken, branded withing the hearts of Hawaiians is the love and pride for his Beloved Flag. The flag which holds memories of many years spreading its wings in peace over the cheeks of Hawaii nei. And for which none of us can say that we were robbed and saddened under its protection. Not at all! Our hearts will only cherish for all times, the loving memories and peace; and as such, are not each and every Kanaka Hawaii burning with aloha for it?

The falling of the Hawaiian Flag from where it proudly fluttered on the tips of the warm breezes of Hawaii nei, is like the death of origin and foundation of this people [lahuikanaka]; and it is clear that the branches and leaves of this tree (The Hawaiian Nation) will wither and fade, a tree that was greatly admired by other nations for its lush and verdant growth. What was called the “Paradise of the Pacific [Paredaiso o ka Pakipika].”

Therefore, where is it today? It has gone, and died; and it is but the wisps that are budding, without a parent to feed its nourishing waters. For the trunk has been chopped.

Because of this heart-wrenching thing, the Lahui Hawaii invites all of you, native Hawaiians. From this day forward, to discard your living indifferently, lazily, wastefully, off others, and all of your childish ways; and for each and everyone of you to stand and fight against the obstructions in this world with patience, caution, independence, and righteousness; and it is through this that Hawaii nei will once again regain its success and pride. Now is the time, and it is only now that we can do the mending while this striped cloth has not become too ragged. (Inoa Lahui.)

Description of Yedo, capital of Japan, 1860.

Yedo.

This is the capital of the nation of Japan; it is a grand city. It is built by the sea, by a great and fine harbor; but large ships cannot approach it.

The land surrounding that city is beautiful, and is well farmed, and there are many shade trees and fruit trees. Inland of the city of Yedo, there is a tall mountain from 12,000 to 16,000 feet, almost like Mauna Kea; it is topped by snow and a caldera like Mauna Loa. It is a sacred mountain for the people there, they go there to worship and to repent for their sins.

In the city of Yedo, there are five forts which are equipped with cannons; there are a great number o people, and houses are crowded together, but the houses are not nice, they are dilapidated. They are not painted, and not improved.

Shops are small, not like here in Honolulu. Some houses however, of the distinguished people, are nice, and they are surrounded by fine trees. The streets of the city are wide, and straight, and clean as well. The houses of the alii there are restricted, men and women cannot enter; only when given permission can they enter. They are surrounded by great and tall walls. The length of this city is twenty miles, and the width is twelve miles. The population is not clear; it is said that the number of people in that city is almost three million.

The currency there is like this; this is similar two cents, and it is a copper coin; there are a many variety of currency.

Here is a problem that the haole traders have there: the fact that people there don’t want foreign money; Mexican currency is what is wanted, and so trading is problematic.

Perhaps this land would benefit by their chiefs coming here and to America; they would see many new things and get educated. And they’d return to their land and tell the alii what they saw, and then reform their land following the tenants of Christianity.

[This is just a few years after Japan was forced to end its sakoku policy by the United States and Perry (1854).

Great Seal of the Republic of Hawaii.

In today’s P. C. Advertiser (February 25), a picture of the Great Seal of the Republic of Hawaii was printed.

By our understanding of that image, there is no way that those who established this Republic can erase or end or eradicate visages of the Monarchy and its accomplishments, from the seal mentioned above.

They stated and vowed that there will be no way that the reestablishment of the Kingdom of Hawaii nei will be allowed. However, when they set out to create a Seal for their Government. And now, that foolish idea of the plunderers and thugs has gone awry.

Being that, (1.) On that Great Seal, is the foundation of the first Seal of the Monarchy of Hawaii nei. (2.) There is the stripes of the Hawaiian Flag of the Monarchy. (3.) There stand puloulou, a symbol of the Hawaiian Monarchy of old. (4.) There is an image of Kamehameha I., the King who unified the Hawaiian Archipelago into one Nation. (5.) There are the words—”Ua Mau ke Ea o ka Aina i ka Pono” affixed onto this new Seal, the words given by King Kamehameha III after the restoration of the Independence of Hawaii nei by Great Britain.

All these things were from the Great Seal of the Monarchy of Hawaii nei (except Kamehameha I.)

The new things added are these. (1.) Rays of the Sun. (2.) The image of Kamehameha I. (3.) The image of the Goddess of Victory. (4.) The Star. (5.) The Phoenix Bird, and (6.) The words, Republic of Hawaii.

Their intense desire is to rub out, to stomp out, and to end for all time, things of the Monarchy of Hawaii nei, lest vestiges of that sort remain in Hawaii; but that is not possible: there is no erasing, nor putting end to deeds done by the past Monarchs of Hawaii.

We know the story of the Phoenix, but it is not the same as the explanatory speech by P. C. Jones at the Armory [Hale Paikaukoa] in the year 1893, and these are his words:

“Once, Mrs. Kinau Wilder [Waila] went to where Ostrich were raised near Diamond Head [Laeahi]. One of the birds of the French Doctor Trousseau laid an egg, and it was on that occasion given to Kinau, and the egg was called Kinau. However, it was left there to be sat on by a bird until it hatched.

“This is similar to this Republic,” according to Jones. “It was born like that egg, Kinau.”

There is one unfortunate thing about that egg called by the name of Kinau, that being, it was a rotten egg [huaelo]. There was no chick born from that egg.

Jones didn’t know of the outcome of that egg, for it was but a yolk-less egg [hua makani], a hua laalaau?, a worthless egg.

Perhaps this will be the outcome of the Republic to which he compares it to? But at any rate, that is the kind of Ostrich egg that Kinau chose.

The shell of that astonishing egg is kept at the residence of Trousseau [Kauka Farani] in Makiki.

This astonishing Ostrich is not the same as a Phoenix which rises from the ashes.

The Leprosy Hospital on Molokai.

Two weeks ago we published a communication from a gentleman of unquestioned veracity, regarding the management of this establishment. Rumors had from time to time reached us about the neglected conditions of the unfortunate natives driven to that secluded district, but not having the facts at our command, we were unable to speak knowingly. We have since learned that the real state of things has not been more than half published, and that every word of our correspondent is true.

We have no another and more full statement furnished by a gentleman who has visited the leprosy station on Molokai. He informs us that the number now there is 118, of whom 80 are males and 38 females. Besides the lepers, there are 34 persons not diseased, who have gone there to take care of their sick friends or relations. These persons live with the lepers, eat and sleep with them, and are free at any time to go and return again to their homes. They assert that the Board of Health gave them permission so to do. There are also eleven children in the settlement, but whether they are diseased or not, we do not learn.

The overseer reports only 23 deaths as having occurred since the first lepers were sent there in November, 1865, but the number is believed to have been much larger, as the total number of lepers sent there probably exceeds two hundred. We quote from our correspondent:

“The great majority of the lepers are a pitiable sight to behold. I have not seen more than four or five in the whole number who appeared to me able to work. The hands and feet appear to be the parts most generally destroyed. How anybody, who has seen them, could expect them to do much work, I know not. I am satisfied that by far the greater portion of them cannot do much. Their hands and feet are a terrible sight. The disease evidently progresses very rapidly among those who have been sent there. I visited them last April, and on this my second visit, I was surprised at the rapid progress of the disease in various individuals. There they are, thrown constantly together, in all stages of the disease, with no medicines, no physicians, no comforts—furnished only with the absolute neccessaries for keeping soul and body together in a well person—and PUT ON STARVATION RATIONS AT THAT—a mass of seething, festering corruption, rotting to death.

“The Board of Health have done perhaps as well as they could under the circumstances; but if they cannot control the circumstances better than they are now doing, I shall begin to consider the plan a decided failure. At first, I believed the plan of isolating them there was the best; but having seen how it works, I am more and more inclined to believe that the best and least expensive plan would be to have but one hospital, and that in the neighborhood of Honolulu, where they could be under the immediate supervision of the Board of Health and a physician.

“The rations for some time past have been four biscuits of hard bread per week to the stronger ones, and ten ditto per week to the feebler ones: and even that only allowed to those who have been there less than six months. Those who have been there longer are told to ‘work if they want food.’ Four pounds of salt beef or salmon per week is the allowance of meat to each one. The beef is a swindle. Much of it is corrupted, and some of the barrels are daubed with tar on the inside, which imparts its taste and flavor to the whole contents. The salmon is in good condition. The old thatch houses which were standing when they went there are all the houses they have, except as some of the stronger ones are able to put up huts for themselves. They have no suitable house of worship, and ought to be furnished with a plain frame building for the purpose.

“Notwithstanding their wretched condition, they have planted some sweet potatoes and other vegetables. They have no kalo or poi at present, though there is enough kalo land to supply them well, if properly managed. But they have a a good quantity of kalo planted, and when it gets ripe, some months hence, may again enjoy their native staff of life. The agent who has immediate charge of them, Mr. Louis Lepart, does as well as he can by them, but is often at his wits’ end to know what to do. He can only dole out to them such supplies as he receives from the Board of Health.

“I ought perhaps to mention that there has not been a single birth among them up to the present time.

“A physician went among them, saw them, examined a number of them, and unhesitatingly affirmed that several who were there as lepers, had not that disease at all. Many of them have been subsisting in great measure, for months past, on wild horse-beans, which grow abundantly among the rocks. But the weaker ones cannot endure the fatigue of gathering and roasting them. I am sure, if the Board of Health could only see and know the truth in the case, they would endeavor to remedy matters; and yet Mr. Lepart and Mr. Meyers say they have represented the case to Dr. Hutchison.

“Such are the facts as I learned them on the spot, and saw them with my own eyes, and gathered them from satisfactery testimony. I believe they are correct, as I was careful to make full inquiries of all parties.”

Here is a clear impartial statement of the Molokai Leper Hospital, reflecting sadly on the Hawaiian Government. The Minister of the Interior, as President of the Board of Health, is responsible for the condition of these lepers, and to him—a physician, supposed to be qualified to take charge of such a service—the public look for reform. The whole plan of isolating the lepers in such an out-of-the-way place on Molokai, was a great mistake. They should have been kept here near Honolulu, where their wants can be supplied, and where proper medical attendance can be given. The hospital at Kalihi is a credit to the nation, but for its condition, Dr. Hoffmann chiefly deserves credit; for he is untiring in his zeal and efforts in behalf of these poo creatures. Now let the rest be brought here, kept from starvation, and cured if possible. Under Dr. Hoffmann’s care, a large portion of them may yet be cured.

To the Editor of the Commercial Advertiser:

Sir:—One of those strange scenes, which show how petty and mean are all the doings of this life, struck me on my last trip to the leprosy village of Molokai. Indeed the beautiful and picturesque view presented by the perpendicular rock that surrounds the place—this awful precipice of from two to five thousand feet in height—was truly grand, and the perfect quietness of that isolated spot gave deepness to the impression received on my visit. It would indeed be a fit paradise in which these poor sick wretches, stamped forever by a fatal destiny, might end the rest of their days in peace, though banished far from home, friends and kindred. Not only do natives, but human cupidity seems to persecute them.

The condition of these poor and unhappy wretches does not seem to be too low a subject for the most selfish intrigues and speculations.

Interested by the study of that disease which has afflicted mankind for so many centuries, I descended the nearly perpendicular pali, to witness the lepers, accompanied by Mr. Myers of Molokai, and Mr. King, the photographer of Lahaina, who were anxious to share with me the fatigues and pleasures of the trip.

But how was I disappointed, and what terrible lesson had I yet to learn of human infamy, and official neglect! How indignant was I when I heard the cries of the emaciated and ghastly inhabitants of this place, like the wailing of damned souls in hopeless hate, “Pilikia, aole ai, aole ai!” Their forms still seem before me, asking God as well as the Government, “what they have done to deserve such a punishment?”

It is true that Mr. Louis, the superintendent of the place, wrote to the Board of Health at Honolulu for provisions. The answer came back, “Let them work.” Yes! Let them be driven out of human society, and be compelled to work! Let them work with their sore limbs and swollen toes, while exposed by every change of temperature to the most painful exacerbations of the disease. Let them work, so that we may have our share of the products of their labor.

The Board of Health could hardly avoid sending a barrel of salt beef; (fresh meat is here a sight good for sore eyes;) but it smelt so horribly, that only a famine could persuade these poor wretches to eat it.

For the benefit of humanity, please to publish this letter.  Sic itur ad astra.

Critique of Government Policy to Isolate Leprosy Patients, 1867.

The Lepers on Molokai.—We are rejoiced that the Commercial Advertiser has drawn the public attention to the lepers on Molokai. The whole scheme of placing these miserable beings in so remote and inaccessible locality has proved itself worse than a failure. Let there be some isolation—some separation—but none so extreme is necessary. The Board of Health had, we doubt not, none other than good intentions, but we trust they will revise the whole subject.

CRYING IN REGRET

Honolulu, Aug. 10—The government has set aside the home lots at Puoina [Punchbowl] to be auctioned off. The prices have gone much higher than their value. What is so sad is that some homes which have been lived in by people for a long time will go to those who have a lot of money.

When these people who have homesteaded on these lands for many years in the past learned that their homes will go to the rich, some sat down in chairs and cried in despair over all the long years spent saving. How sad for those people who will lose their homes!

This is one of the things that Representative Kuhio opposes in the administering of the government by Governor Frear, that being the putting up for open auction lands suitable for Homesteads. It is clear that the poor will be crushed by the wealthy. Listen, oh you poor people, think carefully about your Representative of Honolulu, and choose a Representative who supports Kuhio, the one who is fighting for the rights of the poor Homesteaders [na poe Home Hookuonoono].

A VOICE FROM UTAH.

Solomon Hanohano, Editor of the Kuokoa, Aloha oe:—Because I want to know the news of the land of our birth, the desire to get a subscription to the Kuokoa grew. Being the the new year is coming, it would be a means for me to see the news of our home and the progress of the political scene or its regression, as well as the victories or discouragements of our fellow makaainana.

Not because Iosepa lacks newspaper subscribers, but for me to get a personal one.

This is one of the important years regarding the nation, being that the leadership of the power of the nation went to the Democrats; the big question is just this: Will the poor makaainana really benefit, or will they be left unstable once again like during the presidency of Cleveland, but it is only time that will tell.

If those elected could follow through on what their lips pledge to the masses, then we indeed will be blessed, however if it is like what Isaiah said, thusly: “These people come near to me with their mouth, but their hearts are far from me.” [Isaiah 29:13] Then comes those famous words of that old timer of Lahaina: “Saying, when indeed will that happen.” [“I mai hoi, ahea la ka hoi.”] The big-eyed images know that the small-eyed images are not watched. [Ikeia aku la no na kii maka nunui, nana oleia iho la na wahi kii maka liilii ??]

My aloha to the few Hawaiian makaainana left who are squeezed and assimilated [i ka opaia aku ua pili pu ?] until they are totally gone from the beloved face of Hawaii, along with the increase of the other races upon the land. And so too with the various diseases of the different races whose devastation spread to our people who lack immunity. Aloha to our people.

As for our living in this unfamiliar land, this land that true Mormons know as the chosen land, and a land to foster the believers in that one faith, all of the Hawaiians are in good health as well as the Samoans, from the old to the young.

I have faith that Iosepa will become a place where Hawaiians will multiply once again, and that these valleys will become full of true Hawaiians and Samoans, when the children are born, and grow up, and marry and give birth.

Some proof of this belief is the great desire of the president of the Mormons for the youths to marry of their own race so that this land is full of Hawaiians. For according to him, it is here that the people of the islands of the ocean will spread.

The town of Iosepa is growing. The church is building homes for the people without homes, lest they live in disarray as the Hawaiians before, with two or three families in a single dwelling.

The workers are paid a dollar every Saturday. The children are taught in the school here in Iosepa. Two children graduated from the local school of Iosepa, and are attending high school, they are Joseph H. Bird and William Pukahi, both are true Hawaiians.

I have been just chosen as judge, and George K. Hubbell as sheriff of the district. We are both Republicans, which also are the majority of the Hawaiians here.

Perhaps this will do.
