Death of a Chiefess.—Jane Loeau, a descendant in the female line of the ancient chiefs of Kauai, and a reputed granddaughter of Kamehameha I., died suddenly in this city on Wednesday last. She was 45 years of age, and was in childhood an inmate of the Chief’s school under the charge of Mr. and Mrs. Cooke, at the same time with Kamehameha IVth and Vth and His present Majesty.

John Young is a grandchild of Queen Emma. Here at Queen Emma Hall [Kuini Ema Holo], the precious gifts from Britain are being cared for. In this Hall you can see antiquities of times gone by along with portraits of Queen Emma; Kamehameha IV, Liholiho; and the Prince, Kahakuohawaii. The favorite of Kamehameha IV was dogs, and when he was done eating, he would say, “That tiny pig was so delicious.”

More on the Honorable Lilia Kamakaeha Paki’s marriage, 1862.

The Ones Who Were Married.

At 8 o’clock at night, on the 16th of this month, the Honorable Lilia Kamakaeha Paki was married to Adjutant General, Major John O. Dominis at Haleakala, the house of the Honorable C. R. Bishop and A. Pauahi Bishop. The ones who attended the royal bride were Elizabeth Kekaaniau Laanui and Martha Swinton; those attending the groom were the Honorable Colonel D. Kalakaua and William Allen [? William Allani] (of Kawaihae).

Present were the Chief, the King; her Highness Princess V. Kaahumanu, his Highness L. Kamehameha; the Honorable Governor Kekuanaoa; Colonel P. Y. Kekuaokalani; and the parents of the bride, and the parent and cousins of the groom.

The ones to be wed were gathered and they went out and entered the great parlor and it was there that the couple stood.

The uniting of the pair was done with much reverence, and all the proceedings of the wedding were fine, as well as with the attendants.

The Rev. C. Damon stood and began the marriage ceremony; then the ring and the marriage fee [? ka uku o ka mare ana] was given to the groom, from the groom to the bride, and from the bride to the Priest; the Priest took the fee and gave the ring once more to the groom, who put it on the brideʻs finger. When this was done, the groom was made to give his vow and then the bride. The couple were questioned, and then the two knelt down and Priest gave a prayer, and after the prayer, the Priest asked, “Who will give this woman to this man?” The Honorable C. R. Bishop stood and took the hand of the bride and gave it to the groom; the Honorable A. Pauahi Bishop, the parents of the couple and everyone else stood once more and approached. Everyone was full of joy for this beautiful wedding.

In midday of that very day, a party was given for their cortege, and all who found themselves amongst that fine gathering felt admiration.

After the marriage of the alii, the attendants returned to their sides until they reached Washington Place [Wasenetona Hale], the place of residence of the groom.

It is said that this is the second of the righteous marriages known in our tiny Kingdom, and by glancing through the gate, it is indeed righteous.

These are fine examples for those who are not married, so that the Royal family that associates with the multitudes will become numerous. There are but a few High Chiefs born of the land left, and with this marriage to a haole Royal one, it is hoped that the Royal couple live righteously along with the prayer that they bear good fruit of the sacred descent of the line of Heulu.

[Does anyone know if Pauahi had a name that started with an “A.”? For some reason she is here twice referred to as A. Pauahi Bihopa.]

I was engaged to Mr. Dominis for about two years and it was our intention to be married on the second day of September, 1862. But by reason of the fact that the court was in affliction and mourning, our wedding was delayed at the request of the king, Kamehameha IV., to the sixteenth of that month; Rev. Dr. Damon, father of Mr. S. M. Damon, at present the leading banker of the Islands, being the officiating clergyman. It was celebrated at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Bishop, in the house which had been erected by my father, Paki, and which, known as the Arlington Hotel [Haleakala], is still one of the most beautiful and central of the mansions in Honolulu. To it came all the high chiefs then living there, also the foreign residents; in fact, all the best society of the city.

Admiral Richard Thomas honored once again, 1857.

BY AUTHORITY.

By order of the King, the Chief [Kamehameha IV], it is hereby proclaimed that in order to show the aloha of his Nation at the passing of Admiral Richard Thomas, the one who returned the islands of Hawaii and the Hawaiian Flag on the 31st of July, 1843 to the King recently deceased, seventeen minute guns [pu minuke] will be fired from Puowaina [the fort at Punchbowl] at 12 o’clock on this day, and the Alii will go into mourning and all of the officers of the King’s government shall wear black crepe [hoailona kanikau] on their left arm for fifteen days.

The first Kamehameha Day out in the country, continued, 1872.

At Wailuku.

The children of the Hawaiian nation celebrated this day to commemorate the day believed to be the incorrect [? kupaewa] day of birth of the old chief who passed on, the one who joined Hawaii nei together to become one.

Here below are the activities done in celebration on that day. A crowd gathered at the protestant church in Wailuku; people were separated into those who were born during the time of Kamehameha I, who had a separate seating section, and so too of the people of Kamehameha IIʻs time, and all the way until those of Kamehameha Vʻs time; when looking about, a majority of the audience was born in the time of Kamehameha III.

The program was opened with the singing of a hymn to Almighty God; Hymn 33 and Mr. Napue gave a prayer; there was a second Hymn 196, and that came to an close. J. A. Napela [J. H. Napela] served as the Chairman, and spoke about things of Kamehameha Iʻs time and his deeds, his strength, and so forth. This was the first speech, and it was given for the commemoration, appropriately done by one who is well-immersed in the ways of those times.

Speech number two. C. P. Kealakai, teacher of Halehaku; his speech was about the one being commemorated; his main topic which he expounded upon was aloha for God.

Speech number three. D. H. Hakuole, teacher of Kauaula; his speech was about Opukahaia, and not about the remembrance of Kamehameha I.

Speech number four. Kamoku, a student of the theological seminary; this speech was on the mark [pilipono ka la i papaenaena] and did not go astray; it was the first delightful speech for the audience.

Speech number five. A. Keohokalole, audience member from the island of Maui; this was a speech suited for the learned; the items were woven skillfully together, and was fitting to the program.

Speech number six. I donʻt have the name; it was a speech that was not pertinent to the topic; he was made to sit down by the Chairman.

Speech number seven. Mr. Kaleohano; the speech was about electricity, but it was related to the topic. He spoke about these famous words before the audience, because the haole sugar farmers don’t recall the words of the alii, Kamehameha V, who said: “If I had a million dollars in my pocket, I would be able to demolish these sugar mills for their contempt of the royal proclamation.

Speech number eight. P. Kaluna, teacher of Papohaku, it was electric; it was apparent that his speech showed his great thought for the celebration of the day.

Speech number nine. Kawelau, teacher of the district of that famous rain, the Ukiukiu [of Makawao]; I will not say that he wasn’t electric, but it was somewhat like speech number four.

Speech number ten. Nahunahupu; this was a speech not appropriate for the person who was being commemorated that day.

Speech number eleven. D. Mamaki, teacher of Lahaina; this was a fine speech.

After this speech was over, that concluded the activities of the day. Everyone proceeded down to the place of N. Kepoikai, Esq. There, they were supplied with every type of Hawaiian food, along with haole food, all except liquor. This feast was appreciated for its peaceful nature and great pride, well-suited for gentlemen. The majority of those who partook in the food were government school teachers of the from all around Maui.

Keahu Kealiiaukai, an awesome biography, 1941.

Recalling the Days of Kamehameha V.

KEAHU KEALIIAUKAI

Keahu Kealiiaukai is one of the last Hawaiians left who is not proficient in English. He is a Hawaiian famous for his knowledge of plants, and he is 82 years old. He lives in Lahaina, Maui, the capital of Hawaii in days of yore. Kealiiaukai is now living with his daughter, Mrs. Juliette Pali.

When Kealiiaukai was born in Kaupo, Maui, on the road going to the crater of Haleakala, in the year 1859, this was the fifth year of Kamehameha IV’s reign over Hawaii nei. Kealiiaukai was 4 when that monarch died. He does not recall this.

Remembering the King.

However, Kealiiaukai does in fact remember Kamehameha V, or King Kapuaiwa, his given name; and the last of the Kamehamehas. Kapuaiwa went to Lahaina numerous times, where he was welcomed warmly by his makaainana.

In Kealiiaukai’s eighty and two years of life, he witnessed the passing of the monarchs of his homeland, closing with the overturning of the nation under Queen Liliuokalani’s protection, in 1893. Then the establishing of the provisional government and the Republic of Hawaii, and the joining of the Islands to the United States and the formation of this Territory of America, 40 years ago.

A Religious Man

Kealiiaukai is an important man in Lahaina for the kamaaina there. His wife left this world eight years ago, but she did not however leave behind children. Kealiiaukai is still strong and active. He participates often in works of this Father in Heaven. He spent his life being a member of the Faith of the Latter Day.

Perhaps he is the last medicine man living and practicing from before the times when there was licensing of those in that profession. During his time, it is said that Kealiiaukai practiced healing with plants amongst his own people and healed them due to his expertise in the use of plants growing in the forests of Hawaii, for all types of illnesses.

[So many interesting things about this. The first and foremost perhaps is that this appears as part of an unusual kanikau for Alexander Liholiho Kamehameha IV in the form of a conversation between Kamehameha III (K III.) and himself (K IV.). Another is that if you hula, you probably learned this as a mele inoa for Kalakaua and not as one for Kamehameha IV. Does anyone know who it is that is labeled as (M.) in the conversation? The Kings of Hawaii, 1876.

This is from an issue of “The Friend,” which includes a short biography in English of the ruling monarchs of Hawaii nei, written by S. C. Damon. As for this page of illustrations, they say:

The illustrations accompanying this number of the Friend we could wish were better executed. The plate was made in New York, from the best photographs we could procure in Honolulu. The original of Kamehameha 1st was executed in 1817 by a Russian artist, who accompanied Kotzebue in his voyage, and may be seen by referring to the third volume of his voyage. The original of Kamehameha 2d was executed in England in 1824, in the style of the dress of George 4th’s reign. We think those of Kamehameha 3d, 4th and 5th are very good, but not quite so good those of Lunalilo or His Majesty Kalakaua.

Deer of Kamehameha V., 1867.

The King’s Deer:—This last week, the King’s deer were taken aboard the ship Lock-nar-Garr [Lochnagar ?] to his stables. At midday on this past Saturday, when the King’s stableman opened a stall where the deer were kept to give them water, come to find out, they got out and ran here and there and jumped into the ocean. They were caught; but while they were being caught, its antler was broken, and someone skilled from town tended to its injury. When the schooner Kamaile sails, they will be taken to Molokai.
